Tooth Filling

What is a dental filling?
A dental filling is a procedure used to fill a hole, or cavity, in a tooth. You may need a filling if you have tooth decay or if the structure of the tooth is lost due to trauma. These problems may be found when you have a dental x-ray.

What types of filling are there?
Various materials can be used as fillings. Your dentist will usually advise you which is suitable for you.

Composite resin
Composite resin is a white or tooth-colored material. It can be matched to the color of the other teeth and looks more natural than amalgam, but it is a bit more expensive. Some studies have suggested it might not last as long when used to fill adult back teeth, where there is a lot of pressure.

Glass-ionomer cement
Glass-ionomer cement can also be matched to tooth color, but it might not last as long as composite resin. It is usually used in areas where there is not much biting force and on baby teeth.

Restoration of tooth

A dental filling is a type of restorative dentistry treatment used to repair minimal tooth fractures, tooth decay or otherwise damaged surfaces of the teeth. Dental filling materials, which include composite, porcelain and silver amalgam, may be used to even out tooth surfaces for better biting or chewing.

Dental Filling Dubai

How is a dental filling done?

The dentist will begin the dental filling procedure by preparing the tooth and necessary surrounding areas in order to restore the damaged area. The decay or damage is removed and the area is cleansed to remove bacteria or debris before it is “filled” with the filling materials. Temporary fillings
If there is not time to finish treating a tooth, the dentist may suggest a short-term temporary filling. This will be replaced by a permanent filling at a later date.

What to expect after a filling
After a filling, the affected tooth might feel sensitive when you eat something sweet or bite your teeth together, or when the temperature changes. You should see your dentist if this continues.

What are the benefits and risks of a filling?
A filling is usually a simple, early treatment for tooth decay and it might make the tooth sensitive for a short time. Over time, fillings may chip or crack, allowing food to become trapped between the tooth and the filling. However, a dentist will usually check your fillings during a regular dental check-up.

What are the alternatives to a dental filling?
Sometimes a dentist may use a crown rather than a filling. A crown fits over the tooth to protect its structure, and may be used if there is not enough tooth left to support a filling.

What do dentist use for dental fillings?

Composite fillings are mercury-free, plastic material matching natural tooth colour used to replace missing parts of a tooth. Since they bond to the tooth, composite fillings restore most of the original strength and natural appearance of the tooth. Besides offering durability and strength, many patients opt for composite fillings, as they are also more aesthetically pleasant.

Porcelain fillings are tooth-coloured fillings made from ceramics. They are more resistant to staining and abrasion and can last for longer years. Porcelain fillings are custom made to fit your cavity perfectly as well as match the rest of your teeth.

What happens if you do not get a dental filling?

Tooth decay can only worsen with time. If you do not seek treatment, the decay can progress into a toothache, and may eventually require further treatment or result in the loss of that tooth.

When the decay reaches the nerve of your tooth, you may begin to experience extreme tooth sensitivity and pain. Eventually a dental abscess may form and the tooth might fracture and may have to be extracted.

On the other hand, if treatment is sought early, a dental filling could be placed to restore the decaying tooth. Your dentist will be able to recommend the suggested treatment for your decayed tooth.

Your dentist will be the best person to give you guidance on this during your visit at Best Clinics Dentist & Dental Clinic. Make an appointment online or contact our dental clinic near you. We have dental clinics located around Dubai.
